Student Recruitment
The success of an AdvancePath Academy is built upon the staff's skill in reaching out to out-of-school students and sustaining their attendance once enrolled. Additionally, for most of our district partners, the AdvancePath Academy also serves as an important alternative program for students still enrolled in the district but at risk of dropping out.
AdvancePath uses many data sources to identify out-of-school youth including the district supplied "drop list." AdvancePath personnel contact students on the official list with phone calls and community outreach events.
In addition, AdvancePath:
- Works with district employees involved with student retention and attendance to ensure regular district initiatives are complementary to the Academy mission.
- Identifies and visits community "hot spots" for youth (arcades, skateboard parks, food establishments, etc.)
- Contacts local service agencies and the chamber of commerce to explain program and leave referral information.
- Visits youth oriented job locations and leaves contact information and Academy informational brochures.
- Connects with youth-serving community-based organizations to outline the AdvancePath program.
- Contacts youth division of police department to gather information on potential out of school candidates.
- Visits surrounding post-secondary educational establishments and district alternative programs.
- Works with local media including newspapers, radio and television.
- Meets with the faculty and administrators from the host high school and other area high schools to explain the academy and its purpose.
- Contacts students and families by phone to set up home visits or intake appointments.
- Conducts "Open Houses" held in partnership with district staff to discuss the AdvancePath Academy with students and their parents.
